Basement & cellar mold removal
NYC basements flood from above and below: storm surges, high water tables, sewer backups in heavy rain and burst pipes. Finished basements hide the damage behind paneling and carpet until the smell gives it away.
Signs you need this
- A musty smell when you open the basement door
- White, fuzzy growth on joists or the back of paneling
- Warped or stained baseboards and carpet that never fully dries
- Efflorescence (white salt deposits) on foundation walls
What usually causes it in NYC
- Sewer backups during cloudbursts, which the city’s combined sewers are prone to
- Groundwater and hydrostatic pressure in low-lying and coastal neighborhoods
- Leaking boilers, hot-water heaters and washing-machine lines
Finished vs. unfinished basements
In an unfinished cellar we can usually clean and treat joists and masonry directly. In a finished basement, mold hides behind drywall, paneling, carpet pad and insulation, so it has to be opened up to be removed properly. We make those cuts as small as the damage allows.
After a flood or backup
Speed matters. Materials that soaked in sewage water should be removed, not dried. We extract, remove affected materials, dry the structure with dehumidifiers and air movers, and treat before anything is rebuilt. For sewage cleanup, our sister company handles the biohazard side.
Keeping it dry afterward
We will tell you what we see: grading, a missing backwater valve, gutter discharge at the foundation, or a dehumidifier sized for the space. Fixing the source is what keeps your basement from turning into a repeat job.

Over 10 square feet? Here’s how it has to be done
-
Independent
1Licensed mold assessor
Inspects and tests, then writes the mold remediation plan: what has to be removed, how, and what counts as clean.
-
That’s us
2Licensed remediation contractor
Writes a work plan from the assessor’s plan, sets up containment, removes and cleans, dries, and treats the area.

Independent
3Post-remediation assessment
An independent assessor checks our work. Walls stay open until it passes. Then we rebuild.
Why we don’t test your mold: New York’s mold law (Labor Law Article 32) doesn’t let the same company assess and remediate the same project. A company that tests your home and then quotes you the removal has a conflict of interest. We only remediate, so our estimate is never inflated by our own test results.

FAQStraight answers
Basement Mold Removal: common questions
Is basement mold dangerous if nobody lives down there?
Basement air moves up through the house, especially in winter when warm air rises and pulls air from below. Mold down there affects the whole home.
Should I throw out my carpet after a basement flood?
Carpet and pad soaked by sewage or flood water should be discarded. Carpet wet with clean water can sometimes be saved if it is dried within 24–48 hours.
Do you work with insurance on basement floods?
Yes. We work with all insurance carriers and give you the photos, moisture readings and scope your adjuster needs. Whether mold is covered depends on your policy and how the water got in.
